Syracuse, NY –After an hour bumping elbows at a Target in Buffalo last week, it’s hard for me to believe that “the nation’s stores are hoping a late September rush will save the back-to-school shopping season,” said Stephanie Rosenbloom in a New York Times article today. While overpriced stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and Saks Fifth Avenue are hurting, Wal-Mart and BJ’s Wholesale Club are thriving. I don’t know what stores are hated more, Abercrombie (millions spent in court) or Wal-Mart (still no unions)? Any takes?
I guess that ottoman, shelving unit and TV cable from Target didn’t help much.

Not that I have any great love for big-box stores, but DUH! This article is really surprising in that it makes it sound like the whole retail industry is in trouble, and then blithely mentions that, in an economic downturn, discount retailers are doing good business. I mean, I don’t need an MBA to make that prediction. And, you know, if these hard times are encouraging people to be more frugal, good. We’ve been too hung up on shiny things for way too long now.
