Kafka and Obama

By in Arts, College life, Literature, Technology, TV

Syracuse, NY — Sometimes I use my TV as a big nightlight as I fall asleep or read. The TV doesn’t give off enough light when I read so I use this little LED light clip that my grandfather gave me. I attach to my t-shirt so I don’t have to get up and turn off the big light (do they still make the Clap-Off?).

Anyway, last night I was making some good head way on “Kafka on the shore” by Haruki Murakami (who Laura Miller of the NY Times called “an aficionado of the drowsy interstices of everyday life”) when I stopped and saw that David Letterman was on. Since the TV was being a distraction, I reached for the remote.  Before I clicked it off, President Barack Obama appeared on the screen.

I had to watch.

Despite all the flack President Obama has received for his recent “media blitz,” I really enjoyed the show…and the potato.

p.s. So far “Kafka on the shore” is great. I already recommend it. It feels so good to read some fiction.
