The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Mr. Scott and Ms. Prejean

Syracuse, NY – Wes Anderson’s new film, “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is on the top of my must see list this winter. The New York Times’ movie guru A.O. Scott already has his review online. To sum it up, Scott applauds the film:

Which maybe this isn’t after all. (There is one scene, in which a character dies a violent death, that may be too chilling for some younger viewers to handle.) But at the same time it is precisely the movie that a child smitten with Roald Dahl’s fiction and fascinated by the enigmas of the adult world would dream of making: something to amaze and terrify the grown-ups and win the envy and adulation of his peers.

As a journalism student in Newhouse, this part of the review really stood out:

Mr. Fox retired from the hazardous business of poultry killing and went into newspaper journalism. In enchanted talking-animal fairyland, that is apparently a thriving profession, and those of us in journalism who soon may be stealing chickens out of desperation may envy Mr. Fox the luxury of doing it for love.

Nearly every day, a major magazine or newspaper announces huge layoffs or a drop in subscriptions. The outlook is grim. Everyone here at grad school is desperately trying to keep their spirits up. This little snippet about Mr. Fox’s love for journalism is nice to hear.

p.s. Just saw the clip of Carrie Prejean on Larry King. One word sums it up: hilarious. King has some spunk.

Everyday Newhouse delivers papers with grim news. But I say,”Create a smile.” Just one good thing a day. It’s up to the students to change that mood.
