Who is fourth estate blues?

Fourth Estate Blues is C. Paul Brockwell, Jr., who hails from rural, southern Virginia. Yeehaw! (Editor’s note: no one actually uses “yeehaw” there.) His moniker is the love child of passion and heartache for journalism as an industry.

He did his undergraduate studies in religion and Middle Eastern studies at the College of William and Mary in Virginia.

After graduating in 2007, Paul worked for two years in Virginia state government – first as an assistant to the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, then to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. Despite loving his coworkers and the Governor’s office, he decided to take his past time of talking about and understanding politics to the Fourth Estate, hoping to cover the affairs of government with an eye towards increasing civic engagement among his contemporaries.

For all things political, he’s somewhat critical. Paul’s passions include the Supreme Court, baked goods, wordplay (both subtle and clever and atrociously awful), and civic engagement.

He decided to pursue his dream of covering politics at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse, NY. He is in the magazine, newspaper and online journalism program.

At W&M, Paul worked a year on the ed board of the Dog Street Journal, serving as opinion editor and managing editor for production before deciding to focus his time on academics, serving the Undergraduate Honor Council and working with ResLife.

In 2006 Paul studied at Oxford (Hertford College), primarily focusing on British imperialism, the Crusades, Sufism and Shakespearean tragedies. He even played Malcolm in a New College garden production of Macbeth.

As of January 2010, Paul has been a contributing writer at Syracuse’s Post-Standard newspaper while he continues his studies at Newhouse.

Paul’s interests include words, political satire, comedic arts, pop culture and graphic design (a recent love).
